The Adventure

Wild dolphins, wild Florida

This isn't a packed tourist boat idling in a circle. Your captain runs into the calm back bays and mangrove estuaries of the Ten Thousand Islands — the protected waters where wild bottlenose dolphins actually live, hunt and raise their calves. They surf our wake, leap, and play just feet from the boat.

And the dolphins are only the headliners. Manatees graze the warm shallows, ospreys dive for fish, and roseate spoonbills sweep the mudflats. Small groups, an unhurried pace, and a local captain who knows exactly where the wild things are — and who watches every animal respectfully so they keep coming back.

  • Wild bottlenose dolphins surfing the wake
  • Manatees, ospreys, spoonbills, pelicans & more
  • Small groups — no big-boat crowds
  • Respectful, NOAA-guideline viewing

The Difference

Why a small-group wildlife tour?

Anyone can pile onto a big tourist boat. Here's what a Sand Dollar trip gets you that the crowds never will.

Big tourist boats

  • Packed decks & engine noise
  • Distant, hurried dolphin glimpses
  • A loudspeaker, not a conversation
  • One fixed loop, rain or shine
With us

Sand Dollar small-group

  • A quiet boat the dolphins love to ride
  • Up-close (respectful) wild encounters
  • A local captain who answers every question
  • We follow the wildlife & the best light

The Locals

Who you'll meet out there

These waters are alive. Dolphins are the stars — but keep your eyes peeled for all of these.

Spotter's Challenge

Can you spot them all?

Wild animals make no promises — but on a good cruise you'll tick off most of these. Tap each one you spot!

Their Backyard

Where the wild things are

Your captain reads the wind, tide and water to find the day's best wildlife. These are a few of our favorite haunts.

01

Back-Bay Estuaries

Calm, protected water behind the islands where dolphins hunt and mothers raise their calves.

02

Mangrove Creeks

Wind through tangled mangrove channels alive with herons, ibis and roosting birds.

03

The Passes

Where the Gulf meets the bays — prime hunting grounds where dolphins surf the tide and our wake.

04

Sandbars & Grass Flats

Gin-clear shallows where manatees graze and rays, sea stars and shorebirds gather.

🐬 They're wild animals, so we can't write a script — but dolphin sightings on our tours are nearly an everyday thing.

Plan Your Trip

When to see what

Dolphins are here year-round — we find them on nearly every trip. The rest of the cast changes a little with the seasons.

Cool Season

November – April

Manatees & pelicans

Gentle manatees crowd into the warm bays and huge flocks of white pelicans winter on the flats. Calm, clear water and fewer crowds.

Warm Season

May – October

Calves & nesting birds

New dolphin calves, nesting ospreys and spoonbills, and long golden evenings on glassy water.

🐬 No off-season for dolphins — they live here year-round, and so do we.

We saw at least a dozen dolphins surfing right behind the boat — my kids screamed every time. The captain even spotted a manatee. Best two hours of our trip.

Small boat, no crowds, and the captain knew exactly where to find them. Dolphins, ospreys, spoonbills — a wildlife photographer's dream morning.

So much better than the big tourist boats. We got close (respectfully) and learned a ton. The dolphins put on a show in our wake the whole way.

Wild & Free

How we keep it wild

The reason the dolphins keep coming back: we watch the right way, every single trip.

1

Keep our distance

We observe from a respectful distance and never chase, crowd or corner the animals.

2

Let them come to us

Often the dolphins choose to surf our wake — we let them set the terms of the visit.

3

Never feed wildlife

Feeding harms dolphins and manatees (and it's illegal). We simply never do it.

4

Idle & alert

Slow, no-wake speeds in the bays protect the manatees and sea turtles below.

🐬 We follow NOAA's responsible-viewing guidelines so these waters stay wild for generations.

Good to Know

Dolphin tour questions

Everything you need to know before you cast off. Still curious? Give us a call.

Will we actually see dolphins?

Almost always — wild bottlenose dolphins live in these waters year-round and we spot them on the vast majority of trips. They're wild animals, so we can't write a script, but our captains know their favorite spots. You'll also likely see manatees, ospreys, spoonbills and more along the way.

How long is the tour?

About 2 hours on the water — plenty of time to find the dolphins and cruise the wildlife-rich back bays. Private and custom lengths are available; see live options on the booking screen or give us a call.

Is it good for kids and grandparents?

Absolutely — it's calm, easygoing back-bay cruising with a Coast Guard-approved life jacket for every guest. Little ones love the dolphins and there's no swimming required.

Can we get close to the dolphins?

Often the dolphins choose to surf right alongside the boat. We always watch respectfully and follow NOAA guidelines — we never chase or feed them, which is exactly why they keep coming back.

What should I bring?

Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water and a camera — a zoom lens or binoculars are great for wildlife. We provide water and life jackets; coolers with your own snacks and drinks are welcome.

Where do we leave from?

We depart from San Marco Marina in Goodland (604 E Palm Ave) and from Naples Bay Resort & Marina (1500 5th Ave S). Your exact meeting point, directions and parking come with your booking confirmation. Plan to arrive about 15 minutes early.

Can we make it private or add shelling?

Yes! Wildlife tours can be private or small-group, and our captains love adding a shelling stop or a sunset along the way. Just tell us what you're hoping for when you book, or call and we'll build the perfect day.
