What’s Actually in a Marine Forecast
Open the National Weather Service’s coastal waters forecast and you’ll find the same skeleton every time: a short synopsis describing the overall weather pattern, followed by a zone-by-zone breakdown split into forecast periods — today, tonight, tomorrow, and on out several days. Marco Island and Naples sit inside a specific coastal waters zone (the boundary text usually reads something like “Bonita Beach to Chatham River out 20 NM”), and every period in that zone lists two numbers before anything else: wind and seas. Everything after that — visibility, rip current risk, thunderstorm chances — is secondary. That’s a different document than the daily “beach” or land forecast most weather apps show by default, which leads with air temperature and rain chances for people standing on the sand, not people underway. If your app doesn’t have a dedicated marine or coastal waters tab, you’re probably reading the wrong forecast for a boat trip.
You don’t have to hunt for this document. The National Weather Service publishes it directly on its marine forecast pages, organized by zone, and it also runs continuously over NOAA Weather Radio on a dedicated VHF channel — the same quiet chatter you’d hear in the wheelhouse before we ever leave the dock. Most boating and weather apps pull the same underlying zone data, though the labeling varies, so look for a tab called marine, coastal waters or nearshore forecast rather than the default city forecast the app opens to. If a source only gives you a single daily high, a low and a rain percentage, it isn’t a marine forecast, no matter how confidently it’s presented.
Wind in Knots, Explained
Marine forecasts report wind speed in knots, not miles per hour — multiply by roughly 1.15 to get the mph figure you’re used to, so “wind 10 to 15 knots” is about 11 to 17 mph. Direction matters just as much as speed. A north or northeast wind behind a winter cold front lays the backcountry down flat while stacking up a short, steep chop on the open Gulf-facing beaches; a south or southwest sea breeze does the opposite, building through the afternoon and easing again after sunset. Our captains read the wind line first because it tells you two things at once: how the open water will behave, and which side of an island will actually block it for your route. Pay attention to the qualifiers around the number, too. A forecast reading “wind increasing to 15 to 20 knots in the afternoon” is telling you the morning will run calmer than the evening, which is exactly why our shelling and sunrise routes often get scheduled around that curve rather than fought against it. Gusts get called out separately from sustained wind — “wind 10 to 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots” means the average breeze is manageable but the occasional puff hits harder, which matters more to a small open boat than a full-size charter vessel. None of that nuance shows up in a one-line weather-app summary, which is exactly why the full marine forecast text is worth the extra thirty seconds to read.
Seas in Feet: Wave Height
The seas number in a marine forecast isn’t the tallest wave you’ll see — it’s called significant wave height, an average of the highest one-third of waves measured in open water. A forecast reading “seas 2 feet or less” is describing typical open-water wave height; individual waves can still run taller, and the number says nothing about the short, stacked chop that can build over a shallow pass on an outgoing tide. It’s also strictly an open-Gulf measurement. The Ten Thousand Islands backcountry — the mangrove creeks, bays and passes most of our routes actually run — doesn’t have enough open distance for waves to build the way that offshore number assumes, which is a big part of why the Gulf gets choppy out front while a route two miles inland stays flat calm.
Coastal Waters Zones
The National Weather Service doesn’t issue one forecast for the whole Gulf coast — it slices the water into zones, each covering a stretch of coastline out to a set distance offshore (commonly 20 nautical miles here), and every zone gets its own wind, seas and advisory language. Pull up the wrong neighboring zone — say, one covering water south of Cape Romano when your trip runs out of Goodland — and you can end up planning around conditions that don’t apply to your actual route. This is also the level at which a Small Craft Advisory gets issued: a zone-wide statement triggered once wind and wave thresholds are met in open water, and it doesn’t automatically mean every route inside that zone is off the table. Gulf Forecast vs. Sheltered Backwater
This is the gap that trips up most first-time visitors reading a forecast on their own: the coastal waters forecast is built entirely around open, unobstructed Gulf water, and Marco Island and Goodland sit tucked behind a string of barrier islands — Keewaydin, Kice, Cape Romano — and a maze of mangrove-lined channels that block fetch, the open distance wind needs to build real waves. A forecast calling for “seas 2 to 3 feet” offshore can mean a gentle ripple on a sheltered shelling or sunset route, while that same number matters a great deal on an offshore run, which is exactly why our fishing charters captains lean hardest on the coastal waters forecast before deciding how far out to run. None of this replaces the judgment call; it’s just the vocabulary behind it.
