The simple definition
A tritoon (sometimes called a triple-tube boat) is exactly what the name suggests: a pontoon-style boat that floats on three long aluminum tubes rather than two. The flat, open deck on top looks just like any pontoon — wide, walk-around, plenty of seating — but underneath there’s an extra tube running down the centerline. From the Helm: Why our tritoon shrugs off Capri Pass chop on a stiff southwest wind
Our captains make the call before anyone books, not after: on a day with wind stacked out of the southwest, we run the tritoon and leave the narrower hulls tied up at the dock. Crossing Capri Pass against a building sea is where the difference actually shows — a two-tube boat wants to skate sideways off the crest of a wake, and a tritoon just doesn’t. We check the marine forecast the night before and again at first light, and a southwest blow past about 12 knots is usually the trigger. We’ll walk that decision through with guests at check-in if conditions are borderline that morning, because which boat we run changes where we’re comfortable taking you, not just how the ride feels underfoot.
Load balance is the part nobody asks about but every captain thinks through before the lines come off the cleats. We seat heavier guests toward the center tube rather than letting weight bunch on one side rail, because a tritoon rewards even trim — run it lopsided and you lose some of the edge that third hull is built to give you.
