What Those Numbers Are Actually Measured From
Every tide chart lists two things for every high and low: a time and a height. The time is straightforward enough, but the height confuses almost every first-time boater, because it's not measured from the sea floor and it's not measured from some average sea level either. It's measured from a fixed low-water baseline called the datum — almost always Mean Lower Low Water, or MLLW, on U.S. charts. NOAA set that baseline by averaging the lower of each day's two low tides over a 19-year cycle, then locked it in place at each station. Once you know that, the rest of the chart starts making sense. A predicted low of 0.0 feet doesn't mean no water — it means the water is sitting right at that long-term average low. A predicted low of -1.2 feet means the water is more than a foot below that already-low baseline, which is exactly the kind of negative low tide that strands sandbars and drains flats you'd otherwise need a kayak to reach. Why the Times Never Match From One Spot to the Next
Pull up a tide chart for Naples Pier, then pull up one for Marco Island or Goodland, and you'll notice the times don't line up. That's not an error — it's geography. NOAA runs full-time water-level gauges at a handful of reference stations, then publishes time and height offsets for hundreds of subordinate stations nearby, calculated from years of comparison data. Water doesn't rise and fall everywhere at once; a tide has to physically travel up a pass, across a bay, or up a river, and that takes real minutes to hours depending on the distance and the shape of the channel. The tide at Caxambas Pass doesn't arrive at the same moment as the tide six miles up the Big Marco River, and neither matches Naples. So the single most useful habit you can build is picking the station closest to the actual water you're using — not the closest city, not the airport, the actual pass or beach. If you're planning around a specific stretch of the Ten Thousand Islands, use a station in that stretch. Charts for a spot ten miles away can be off by an hour or more, and an hour matters a lot when you're timing a flat's exposure or a pass's slack water.
How to Spot the Day's Stronger Tide
Most days here bring two highs and two lows, but they're rarely twins. This stretch of the Gulf runs what's called a mixed semidiurnal pattern, meaning the two tides in a day are usually different sizes — sometimes dramatically so. Scan the full 24-hour chart, not just the next high or low, and you'll usually spot one low that's noticeably lower than the other, and one high that's noticeably higher. That lower of the two lows is the one that pulls the most water off the flats and barrier islands, and it's the one worth building a trip around if you're chasing shells or scouting structure. Some days the inequality is small and both tides look similar; other days — especially around new and full moons — one tide dominates the day almost completely, and on a handful of days each month the Gulf even flattens toward something closer to a single daily tide, which is part of why the Gulf doesn't behave like the ocean tide charts you may be used to. The fix is simple: read all four numbers before you commit to a plan, not just whichever one loads first on your phone.
Reading the Range to Guess How Hard the Water Will Move
Subtract the day's low from the day's high and you get the tide's range — and range is the number that tells you how fast the water is going to move through a pass, not the height numbers themselves. A big range means a lot of water has to funnel in or out through Gordon Pass, Capri Pass or Caxambas Pass in a few hours, which means stronger current, more standing chop where that current meets wind or waves, and a shorter, sharper slack window at the turn. A small range — common around the neap tides that follow the first and third quarter moons — moves less water more gently, with a longer, lazier slack. Spring tides, which follow the new and full moon and have nothing to do with the season, stack the sun and moon's pull together and produce the biggest ranges and the strongest currents of the month. None of that shows up as a labeled number on a basic tide chart; you have to do the subtraction yourself, or cross-check it against a slack tide and current guide.
