Then we clock the wind. Running out past Gordon Pass, the light behaves differently depending on which way the breeze is stacking the chop against the tide, and we’ve learned to ease the throttle back early so the sun is still sliding down when you’re standing at the bow, not already gone below the mangroves. Miss that window by ten minutes and you’re toasting a dark horizon instead of the good stuff.
Some evenings the wind sits onshore out of the southwest and Gordon Pass turns lumpy right at the mouth, so we shift the whole run inside instead — up into the calmer reach of Naples Bay, where the water lies flat and the color in the sky still carries just as far. Your captain makes that call in the first few minutes aboard, reading how the flags on the private docks are laying, well before most guests notice anything’s different. We’d rather quietly change the route than let a stiff chop rattle a night you’ve been looking forward to for months.
When it’s time to cut the engine for the actual toast, we ease off slow rather than stopping dead.
