What exactly is a chiton?
Most sea snails and clams build one shell, or two. A chiton builds eight. It belongs to its own class of mollusk, Polyplacophora, a name that literally means "bearer of many plates," and that's the whole story in one word: eight overlapping calcareous plates, called valves, laid down the animal's back like a tiny suit of scale mail. The plates sit embedded in a tough, leathery band of tissue called the girdle, which wraps the whole animal and holds the armor together as it flexes over uneven rock and shell.
Chitons are considered one of the most ancient mollusk lineages still crawling around today, and the basic eight-plate body plan hasn't changed much in a very long time. Underneath that armor is a broad, muscular foot, the same basic tool a snail or a limpet uses, and a mouth armed with a radula, a rasping ribbon of microscopic teeth built for scraping algae and diatoms off hard surfaces. That's really all a chiton does with its life: clamp down, graze, and barely move. It's an unglamorous routine, but it's kept the group going since long before the Ten Thousand Islands existed.
How to identify a chiton on the rocks
A live chiton is easy to overlook and, once you know the shape, impossible to un-see. Picture a flattened gray-brown oval, usually under an inch or two long around here, stuck so tight to an oyster shell or a piece of hard rubble that it looks less like an animal and more like a raised, ridged patch of the rock itself. Look closely and you'll see the eight plates running in a row down the center, each one overlapping the next like roof shingles, bordered by the rougher, sometimes bristly or scaly girdle. Some Gulf species run smoother and paler, others show a distinct raised ridge or beading down each plate, but the eight-part armor is the giveaway every single time.
Resist the urge to pry one loose for a closer look. A chiton's grip is its whole defense system, and pulling one off its rock can tear the soft foot and kill an animal that spent its whole life anchored to that exact spot. Elsewhere in the world chitons get genuinely enormous — the Pacific coast's gumboot chiton can stretch past a foot long — but the species you'll run into around Gulf oyster bars stay modest, easy to miss unless you're already looking down at the rubble instead of out at the water.
Chitons have one more trick worth knowing, and it's the kind of thing that gets a genuine laugh out of kids on board. Pluck a chiton loose from its rock — or find one that's already been knocked free by wave action — and instead of just lying there, some species curl up tight into a rigid little ball, plates locked together into an armored dome around the soft foot inside. It's the exact same trick a pillbug or roly-poly pulls on land, just with calcium carbonate plates instead of a segmented shell. If you find a chiton curled up like that on a piling or in a tide pool, it's alive and doing exactly what it's supposed to do; set it back down gently near hard structure and give it a minute, and most will unroll and reattach on their own once they decide the coast is clear.

Where chitons turn up near Marco Island
Here's the thing about chitons and the Ten Thousand Islands: most of this coastline is exactly the wrong habitat for them. Chitons need hard, stable surfaces to graze — rock, pilings, seawalls, oyster shell — and the barrier islands where our shelling tours run, places like Keewaydin and Kice, are soft sand built for bivalves and gastropods, not armor-plated grazers. Chitons cluster instead on the harder patches: live oyster bars along the backwater creeks, rock revetments and jetty rip-rap, and the pilings and seawalls around docks in Goodland and along the Marco River.
That's exactly why chitons feel like a genuine find instead of a beach staple. Our captains cross plenty of oyster bar and hard-bottom water running routes through the backcountry, and a sharp eye on the exposed rubble at a low tide can turn one up clamped flat and motionless, doing its best impression of a rock. It's a different kind of hunting than scanning a sand flat for a pretty shell — slower, closer to the water, and a favorite trick for kids who like flipping things over to see what's underneath.
Why you'll mostly find loose butterfly plates
Realistically, most chitons you find on this coast won't be alive at all. When a chiton dies, the girdle tissue holding those eight plates together breaks down fast, and the plates simply fall apart and scatter into the shell drift as individual pieces. That's what turns up most often in a handful of shell hash from an oyster bar or a tideline: not a whole eight-plated animal, but a single loose valve, usually no bigger than a fingernail.
Each of those individual plates has a distinctive shape that gives it away. The plates from the middle of the row carry a pair of flared "wing" areas on the underside where they interlocked with their neighbors, and once separated, that shape reads as a small, ridged bow tie or butterfly — which is exactly what shellers call them when they find one. They're a favorite target for anyone chasing the tiny, offbeat side of Gulf shelling, the same crowd that gets excited over a glossy little marginella or a well-marked gaudy natica rather than another big whelk for the shelf.
Collecting ethics: leave live ones, take loose plates
The rule with chitons is simple and it lines up with everything else in the Seashell Guide: if it's alive and clamped to something, it stays exactly where it is. Collier and Lee County prohibit collecting live shells, and a chiton gripping an oyster bar or a piling is unmistakably alive — there's no gray area the way there sometimes is with a shell that might or might not still hold an animal. Loose butterfly plates are a different story. Once a chiton has died and its eight plates have scattered into the drift, those individual pieces are empty shell material, fair to pocket the same as any other piece of hash you'd sort through on a shelling beach. It's a small, satisfying kind of find precisely because so few people know to look for it.
