What exactly is a king tide?
“King tide” isn’t an official forecasting term you’ll find at NOAA, but it’s the name everyone on the water uses for the highest tide of the seasonal cycle — the point where the sun, moon and earth line up closely and the moon happens to be at or near its closest approach to earth, called perigee. Stack a new or full moon on top of that closer-than-average moon, and you get a tide that runs noticeably higher than the everyday high on your moon phase calendar.
On the water it doesn’t feel dramatic. There’s no wind, no rain, often not even a cloud — just a normal blue-sky Marco Island afternoon where the tide keeps climbing past where it usually stops, running anywhere from several inches to over a foot above the predicted high before it turns and drains right back out. That’s the whole event: predictable, astronomical, and gone within a day or two.
Meteorologists sometimes use the term “perigean spring tide” for the exact combination of a full or new moon and lunar perigee — “king tide” is just the plain-English name that stuck. Either way, the tide tables already have it built in months ahead of time, so there’s never a surprise, just a date circled on the chart.
Why king tides peak here in fall
Southwest Florida sees a king tide more than once a year, but the ones people talk about — the ones that show up on Goodland’s streets and in the local news — cluster in September, October and November. Two things stack up in the fall to push the water higher than a spring or summer king tide: Gulf water is at its warmest and most expanded after a long summer, which raises the baseline sea level a few extra inches before the moon even gets involved, and that’s exactly when the calendar lines up a new or full moon with the moon’s closest pass by earth. Add a hurricane season that’s technically still open, and any onshore breeze layers right on top of an already-high king tide window.
None of that makes a king tide a storm. It’s the same mechanics that drive the very lowest of low tides on the Ten Thousand Islands tide charts — a new or full moon pulls the water dramatically both ways, way up at high tide and way out at low tide, on the same lunar cycle. If you’re out shelling the exposed flats at Kice or Keewaydin on a big negative low — empty shells only, as always in Collier County — you’re looking at the low half of that very same king tide event.
Where the extra water shows up
You won’t see king tide flooding everywhere — it shows up at the same handful of low-lying spots every time, because those are the places sitting closest to sea level to begin with. In Goodland, that means water creeping over the edge of the road along the waterfront and pooling in yards and driveways closest to the canals, usually for a few hours around the peak of the high tide. Out on Isles of Capri, docks and seawalls that normally sit a comfortable foot or two above the water can find themselves nearly flush with it, and low floating docks can briefly go underwater at the very top of the cycle.
None of this is storm surge, and it isn’t sea level rise happening in real time in front of you — it’s the ordinary tide running at the top end of its natural range on a clear day, which is exactly why locals call it “sunny day flooding.” It recedes on the same schedule it arrived on, usually within a few hours, and the very next low tide looks completely normal again.
What it means aboard the boat
For our captains, a king tide is less a hazard than an opportunity. That extra foot of water opens up skinny mangrove creeks and backcountry cuts through the Ten Thousand Islands that are simply too shallow to run most of the rest of the month, which is exactly the kind of water a private charter is built to chase down — the narrow, hidden stuff most boats never see. Redfish and snook push up into that flooded mangrove shoreline to feed, which is part of why a fishing charter timed around a king tide window can be worth planning around.
It changes anchoring, too, if you’re anywhere skinny. A spot that reads three feet at low tide can read five or six at the peak of a king tide, which is exactly why our captains watch the whole tide swing, not just the moment they drop the hook — anchor rode that’s plenty of scope at the top of the tide can come up short and start dragging as the water falls back out.
It changes the routine on the dock, too. Lines get slacked and re-set as the water rises higher than a normal high tide, fenders get adjusted, and anything left on a low floating dock gets moved up before the peak. None of it is dramatic if you know it’s coming, which is the whole reason to check the moon phase and tide calendar before you plan a trip around a king tide week instead of getting surprised by one.
King tide vs. storm surge: not the same thing
The two get confused constantly because they both mean “more water than usual,” but they come from completely different causes and behave completely differently on the water. A king tide is scheduled years in advance by the positions of the sun and moon — you can look up the exact day and hour it’s expected to peak on any tide chart right now. Storm surge is wind-driven water pushed ashore by a tropical system, arrives on no fixed schedule, can pile up far higher than any king tide, and comes bundled with the rest of a storm: wind, waves, and often no boating at all.
