What Karenia Brevis Actually Is
The phrase “red tide” describes a bloom of Karenia brevis, a single-celled marine organism — technically a dinoflagellate — that lives in the Gulf of Mexico at low background levels essentially all the time. It’s not an invader and it’s not new; Spanish explorers and early Gulf Coast fishermen described stinging air and fish kills centuries before anyone had a microscope to explain why. Under the right conditions, this normally sparse organism multiplies fast enough to color the water rust-brown or wine-red and to release brevetoxins, compounds that irritate the human respiratory tract and can be harmful to fish, manatees and seabirds in a concentrated bloom. What red tide is not is pollution dumped offshore or a sign the Gulf is somehow broken — it’s a naturally occurring organism doing what algae do when water, light and nutrients line up in its favor. Despite the name, the water doesn’t always turn a dramatic red. How a Bloom Starts and Drifts

Because a bloom drifts with wind and current rather than blanketing the Gulf evenly, effects are genuinely patchy — a beach can be clear and easy to breathe on one morning while a beach a few miles down has stinging air and dead bait in the wrack line. Passes and inlets matter here: strong tidal exchange through an inlet flushes a stretch of shoreline with cleaner offshore water, while a shallow, poorly flushed cove can hold onto a bloom longer. Boat-only barrier islands like Keewaydin and Kice sit right in the middle of that dynamic, which is part of why the same week can produce a great trip to one island and a pass on another. Longshore current adds another layer: water pushed north or south along the coastline can carry a bloom past one inlet and pool it against the next, so a stretch that’s clear this week isn’t guaranteed to stay that way, and a stretch dealing with a bloom now isn’t guaranteed to stay that way either.
What You Might Notice
Not every bloom announces itself the same way, and it depends heavily on concentration and wind direction. In lighter or offshore-blown conditions you may notice nothing at all beyond slightly discolored water. In a stronger, onshore bloom, people commonly report a scratchy throat or cough right at the surf line — brevetoxin becomes airborne in sea spray — along with dead fish washing in and water that reads brown, rust or wine-colored rather than the usual Gulf green-blue.
