What Is a Rip Current, Exactly?
Picture the Gulf pushing wave after wave toward the beach. That water has to go somewhere, and most of it drains back out slowly across the whole width of the sandbar. But wherever there’s a low spot — a gap in the bar, a channel cut by a storm, or the mouth of a pass — the returning water concentrates and speeds up, carving a narrow current that runs straight out to sea. That’s a rip current: not a whirlpool, not something that pulls you under, just a fast lane of water moving away from the beach faster than you can swim against it.
It’s also not the same thing as an undertow, a term that gets thrown around a lot but doesn’t describe a real hazard. Nothing is dragging you toward the bottom — the danger is entirely at the surface, where panicked swimmers fight straight back toward the beach and wear themselves out fighting a fight they can’t win. Read the water first and a rip current is manageable; ignore it, and it’s the reason lifeguards on both Florida coasts spend their summers making rescues.
How to Spot One From the Sand
Before you ever get in the water, take thirty seconds to actually look at it — ideally from somewhere with a little elevation, like a dune crossover or a boat deck, where the pattern is easier to pick out than it is standing at the water’s edge. You’re looking for a break in the rhythm: a gap in the line of waves breaking, where the water on either side is curling over but the water in that one lane just isn’t. That gap is often the surface signature of a rip — deeper water there means incoming swell doesn’t stand up and break the way it does over the shallower sandbar around it.
Other tells stack on top of that one. Look for a streak of choppier, sandier or darker water running perpendicular to the beach, especially if it looks different from the water around it — sediment stirred up by a fast current often gives it away before anything else does. Foam, seaweed or floating debris moving steadily out to sea, in a straight line rather than drifting with the surf, is another giveaway. None of these signs is foolproof on its own, which is exactly why our captains are trained to read two or three of them together before they’ll pick a swim spot for a beach stop.
Why Gulf Rips Aren’t Atlantic Rips
If you’ve spent time on Florida’s east coast, you’ve probably heard more about rip currents there than you ever have here, and there’s a real reason for that. The Atlantic has thousands of miles of open ocean to build swell before it ever reaches a Florida beach, and that bigger, more consistent wave energy drives bigger, more frequent rips. The Gulf of Mexico is a smaller body of water, and our stretch of it is further buffered by a long chain of barrier islands — Keewaydin, Kice, Cape Romano — and wide, gently sloped sandbars that knock down swell before it gets anywhere close to a swimmer’s waist.
That doesn’t make our water rip-proof, and treating it that way is exactly how people get in trouble. The same physics apply anywhere waves break over an uneven sandbar: wherever a gap opens up, the water finds it. What changes here is where the strongest currents actually come from. On our stretch of coast, a lot of the real pulling power isn’t wave-driven at all — it’s tidal. A big outgoing tide funneling through a pass mouth can generate a current stronger than most wave-driven rips you’ll find on an open beach, which is one more reason tide stage at the passes matters as much as wave height does out here.

Where They Form Around Marco, Goodland & Naples
Locally, keep your guard up in two kinds of spots. The first is anywhere a pass meets open Gulf — Big Marco Pass, Capri Pass, Gordon Pass off Naples — where a strong ebb tide pushes a real current out past the beach on either side of the channel. The second is any open Gulf-front beach with a sandbar close to shore, from South Beach and Tigertail on Marco Island to the Naples beaches north of Gordon Pass, where storms and everyday wave action are constantly cutting new gaps and filling old ones back in.
That second point is the one people underestimate most: a beach can be rip-free one week and have a fresh channel cut through the bar the next, especially after a strong cold front. Sandbars here are never static — we cover why on our sandbar page — so a beach you remember from last season may not be behaving the same way today. Boat-only barrier islands like Keewaydin see fewer swimmers, but the same rules apply the moment you wade in past your knees.
Caught in One? Do This
If you ever feel a current pulling you out faster than you’re used to, the single most important thing you can do is not fight it head-on. Swimming straight back toward the beach against a rip is the move that exhausts strong swimmers and turns a scary moment into an actual emergency. Instead, swim parallel to the beach — it genuinely doesn’t matter which direction — until you feel the pull ease up, which usually only takes a few strokes since rip currents are narrow. Once you’re clear of it, angle back toward shore at whatever pace feels comfortable.
If you can’t make progress, stop swimming altogether. Float, tread water, or roll onto your back, and wave one arm overhead to signal you need help — a rip current won’t pull you under, so conserving energy beats burning out fighting it.
