What Is a Semele Clam?
Semele is a genus of small saltwater clams in the family Semelidae — shallow burrowers that live just under the sand on tidal flats and wash loose as single valves whenever a falling tide, a squall, or a boat wake stirs up the bottom. Two species turn up again and again in the Ten Thousand Islands: the purplish semele (Semele purpurascens) and the white Atlantic semele (Semele proficua). Neither gets much attention in the popular shelling guides, which is exactly why they trip people up — round, whitish, and roughly the size of a quarter or half-dollar, they look close enough to a dozen other Gulf clams that most beachcombers toss them back without a second look. Biologically, semele clams are a little unusual for a bivalve. Many species in the family use one long, flexible siphon to vacuum loose organic material off the sand surface instead of filtering everything from the water column the way a typical clam does, which is part of why they favor the soft, current-swept flats around passes and cuts rather than open surf beaches. That preference for quieter, current-fed sand-mud bottoms is exactly what makes the leeward flats behind Marco Island’s barrier islands such reliable ground for them.
How to Tell a Semele by Its Hinge
Flip any suspected semele shell over and look just behind the beak, that small raised point near the hinge. Venus clams and most other round Gulf bivalves button their two valves together with interlocking teeth and an external ligament you can see running along the outside edge. A semele does it differently: instead of relying only on external hardware, it holds an oval, spoon-shaped pit sunk into the hinge plate — called a resilifer — that cradles an internal rubbery pad, the resilium, which springs the shell open once the muscles relax. Nothing else common on our beaches carries that exact feature, which makes it the fastest way to confirm you’re holding a semele and not a young venus clam or a small dosinia. Run a fingernail along the inside of the hinge; if it catches on a smooth, scooped depression instead of straight ridges, you’ve got your answer.
Most of what you’ll find are single valves rather than matched pairs, since the hinge lets go once the animal dies and the two halves usually tumble apart in the surf. Every so often you’ll spot a still-hinged pair lying open flat like a little book — a nice find, and a sign the shell hasn’t traveled far. Fresh valves hold a faint sheen and keep their color; wave-tumbled ones bleach chalky white and lose the purple rays first, which is exactly why plenty of worn-down purplish semele end up misidentified as the plain white Atlantic species once the surf has sanded them smooth.
Purplish vs. White Atlantic Semele
Once you’ve confirmed the hinge, the two species split apart on color, not shape. The purplish semele stays small, usually under an inch across, and carries faint violet-to-purple rays fanning out from the beak over a cream background, with an interior that often blushes orange or purple right where the hinge sits. The white Atlantic semele runs a little larger, up to about an inch and a half, and skips the color almost entirely — plain white to pale cream outside and in, with slightly more pronounced concentric growth ridges that give the surface a faintly ribbed feel under your thumb. Both are thin enough to see light through when you hold a fresh valve up to the sun, a decent trick for telling a semele from the thicker-shelled clams sharing the same flat.
Shape alone won’t separate the two, so lean on the simple field rule: if it’s under an inch and shows any hint of purple or orange staining, call it a purplish semele. If it’s white through and through and pushing an inch and a half, it’s more likely the Atlantic species. Either way, the same spoon-shaped hinge pit confirms the genus before you even worry about which species you’ve got.
Where to Find Them
You’ll turn up semele valves the same way you find most of the Ten Thousand Islands’ smaller bivalves: walking the swash line on a falling tide across the boat-only flats. Keewaydin Island, Kice Island, and the sandbars around Cape Romano and the Caxambas Pass spits all hold the soft sand-mud bottom semele clams like to burrow in, and a good outgoing tide does the digging for you, stranding fresh valves right at the waterline. They tend to show up mixed in with more famous names — cockles, tellins, coquinas — rather than in dedicated beds, so the trick is patience: work the wet sand slowly instead of scanning for one obvious shape.
The best window is usually right around a negative low tide, when the sand-mud flats ringing these islands are exposed farther than usual and the retreating water leaves a fresh wrack line of whatever it dislodged. Winter cold fronts and summer squalls both do the job, and Ten Thousand Islands shelling runs strong across the calendar rather than piling up in any one stretch of the year, so a semele hunt works whether you’re down here in January or July. Semele vs. Venus Clams vs. Dosinia
Semele shells get mistaken for two other round Gulf clams more than anything else: the cross-barred venus and the disk dosinia. All three are roughly circular, all three turn up on the same flats, and all three get lumped into the mental bucket of generic white clam by first-time shellers. The cross-barred venus is the easiest to rule out on sight — it’s noticeably thicker and sturdier, with bold crosshatched ribs you can feel with your eyes closed. The disk dosinia is the trickier call, since it shares the semele’s glossy, thin-shelled build; the giveaway there is size and surface, with dosinia running bigger and showing tight, glassy concentric grooves rather than a semele’s faint growth lines.

If the shell in your hand is thin enough to see through, carries that internal spoon-shaped pit, and shows no crosshatching, you’re holding a semele. If it’s chunky with bold ribs, it’s a venus. If it’s glassy-smooth, perfectly round, and on the bigger side, it’s a dosinia.
