What Exactly Is a Comb Jelly?
When you're out on the water and something roughly the size of a walnut drifts past the hull throwing off little rainbow sparks, your first instinct is probably to flinch — it looks like a jellyfish. It isn't. Comb jellies belong to their own ancient branch of the animal tree, the ctenophores, and they split off from true jellyfish and their stinging relatives a very long time ago. The giveaway is right there in the name: instead of stinging tentacles, a comb jelly moves and feeds using eight rows of tiny hair-like paddles called cilia, fused together into what look like tiny combs running down its body. Comb Jelly vs. Jellyfish: What's the Real Difference?
The confusion is fair — both animals are gelatinous, both drift with the current, and both show up in the same calm backwaters and passes. But once you know the tells, you won't mix them up again. True jellyfish are cnidarians, built around stinging cells called nematocysts that fire on contact — that's the sting you're trying to avoid. Comb jellies have zero nematocysts. None. They can't sting you no matter how you handle them, because the stinging-cell toolkit simply isn't part of their biology. Structurally they're built differently too: jellyfish pulse by contracting a bell-shaped body, while comb jellies glide using those eight beating comb rows instead of any muscular pulse. Where and When to Spot Comb Jellies Near Marco Island
Comb jellies favor exactly the kind of water our routes spend a lot of time in: calm, current-protected passes, mangrove edges, and the quieter backwaters around Goodland and Rookery Bay rather than open, choppy Gulf water. They're around year-round in Southwest Florida's warm water, but you'll usually spot the most of them, and the clearest daylight shimmer, from late spring through early fall when water temperatures climb and the plankton they feed on is thick. Look for them drifting just under the surface near the boat, especially where the wake or a dock light stirs the water — that motion is often what triggers both the rainbow flicker and, after dark, the bioluminescent flash. Is It Safe to Touch a Comb Jelly?
Short version: yes, it's genuinely safe. A comb jelly has no stinging cells anywhere on its body, so there's no version of touching one that results in a sting the way brushing a sea nettle or a Portuguese man o' war would. That said, we'd still ask you to treat it gently rather than handling it much — comb jellies are almost entirely water by weight and extraordinarily fragile, and a firm grip or time out of the water will kill one quickly for no real reason. If one drifts up next to the boat, a light touch or a look is plenty; let it keep drifting.
