How tides actually work
The ocean has a steady pulse: the moon’s gravity tugs the water into a bulge, the earth spins under it, and most of the Gulf coast sees two high tides and two low tides roughly every day. For a sheller, the only number that matters is the low — that’s when the water retreats and uncovers sandbars, flats and the shell line you came for. The deeper that low, the more bottom you get to walk. And how deep the low goes changes through the month with the moon. That’s where spring and neap come in.
Spring vs. neap, the part that matters
Forget the season — “spring tide” has nothing to do with springtime. It means the tide springs to its extremes. When the sun and moon line up, at the new moon and the full moon, their pulls stack together and you get the biggest tidal range of the month: the highest highs and, crucially, the lowest lows. Those are the days the Gulf pulls way back and lays out flats you can’t reach the rest of the month. About a week later, at the quarter moons, the sun and moon pull at right angles and partly cancel out. That’s a neap tide — a gentle range, a modest low, less exposed bottom. You can still shell on a neap, but a spring tide is the one that turns a good beach into a great one.

How to read a NOAA tide chart
Pull up the NOAA tide predictions for a station near you — Naples (Gordon Pass) or Marco Island work for our waters — and you’ll see a curve with daily high and low points and a height in feet next to each. Find the lowest low of the day and note its time; that’s your window. Then look at the height number: a low of 0.0 ft or a negative number means a big drawdown and lots of exposed flat, while a low sitting at 1.0 ft or higher leaves more covered. Glance at the moon phase too — a low near the new or full moon will be deeper than the same time of day at a quarter moon. Aim to be walking the shell line in the hour or two leading up to that lowest low, not after it’s already turned and started flooding back.

From the Helm: Chasing the Falling Hour of a Spring Low Before We Cut the Engine
Before we ever announce a shelling run, one of us is already looking at the tide chart taped inside the helm station, not the calendar. A spring tide on paper means nothing if we’re catching it three hours after dead low with the water already flooding back in, so what we’re actually hunting for is the falling hour right before the bottom of that curve, the window where the flat keeps widening but hasn’t started refilling yet. That single hour matters more to us than the size of the tide itself, and it’s the number most guests never think to ask about before they book.
We run a marine tide app alongside the printed NOAA chart for Marco Island, because wind can shove the predicted low anywhere from twenty minutes to almost an hour off schedule — a stiff northwest wind piles water up and delays the drain, while an offshore breeze can pull the flat out early. Trusting the app number alone, without checking what the wind’s doing that morning, is the fastest way to show up either too early or already missing the best hour.
That wind reading also decides which flat we run to, not just when. On a building southwest breeze we skip the open shelf off Caxambas Pass, since a beam wind chops the shallows and buries fresh shell under churned sand, and tuck instead into the lee flat behind Gullivan Bay, where the bottom stays calm enough to watch it change color at your feet. If both spots are blown out, our plan B is patience — idle in the pass and let the tide finish its work. Guests at the rail watch our depth sounder make that call, the number ticking down to a few bone-white inches.
We tell guests the same thing before we ever leave the dock: we’re not chasing “low tide,” we’re chasing the last hour before it turns, and that’s a moving target we adjust for right up until we cut the engine. On a big spring low with calm wind behind it, we’ll sometimes idle past the first flat that looks fine and run another ten minutes to a spot that won’t be exposed nearly as long, because a wider window beats a shorter walk to the boat.
The mistake we correct most is the assumption that any low tide will do, spring or neap, morning or afternoon. A neap low still exposes a real flat, just a narrower one, and guests who’ve read that “low tide is good” sometimes get frustrated on a neap day expecting shoal-sized real estate. We explain the difference before anyone’s disappointed, not after, and reset expectations to match whichever half of the lunar cycle we’re actually in that week.
